Prep Ahead Suggestions for Roasted Maple Sweet Potatoes
When I prepare ingredients ahead of time, it can help save me time and kitchen space when it comes to making everything for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or a weeknight dinner.
- Peel and Cube the Potatoes: Do up to 24 hours in advance and store them in a bowl of cold water in the refrigerator to prevent browning. Make sure the sweet potatoes are drained thoroughly before cooking on a sheet pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
- Measure Out All Ingredients: Have warm syrup ingredients ready to go, which makes the cooking process quick and easy.
Alternate Cooking Methods for this Side Dish for Thanksgiving
Alternatively, you can make this roasted flavor, candied Thanksgiving side dish using your crock pot.
- Slow Cooker: Place all ingredients except the walnuts and 1 tablespoon of butter in a slow cooker. Cook on low for 3-4 hours, or until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the remaining butter and walnuts just before placing on your Thanksgiving table.
Store and Reheating and Use Leftover Baked Sweet Potatoes
- Store: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Reheat: Reheat the sweet potatoes in a skillet over medium heat, or in the microwave in 30-second intervals until warmed through.
- Use Leftovers: Leftover maple sweet potatoes are great as mashed sweet potatoes and used as a filling for tarts, blended into a creamy soup, or added to a hearty breakfast hash. You could also turn them into sweet potato casserole.
Common Questions About This Roasted Vegetable Recipe
Sure. Feel free to use any type of sweet potato to make this dish as colorful as you like. The natural sweetness goes perfectly with the caramelization.
Make these potatoes less sweet by simply adding less maple syrup to them. You could also sprinkle with salt onto the sweet potatoes.
Expert Tips for Making Maple Syrup Sweet Potatoes
- Evenly Sized Cubes: Cutting the sweet potatoes into uniform cubes is crucial for even cooking. This ensures every piece is perfectly tender at the same time.
- Toasting the Walnuts: Toasting the walnuts brings out their flavor and adds a satisfying crunch. Be sure to toast them gently in a dry skillet until they are fragrant.
- Building Flavor: Don’t rush the browning step. Allowing the sweet potatoes to get a nice caramelized sear in the butter is key to developing a deep, rich flavor.
- Balance is Key: All-purpose seasoning provides a savory counterpoint to the sweetness of the maple syrup. Don’t skip it, as it prevents the dish from tasting one-dimensionally sweet, plus is better than seasoning with salt.
- Serve With: Serve this recipe with Maple Cinnamon Cupcakes, Loaded Mashed Potato Casserole or Air Fryer Turkey Breast.
